Peer Mentoring ProgramWhat is it?A mentor is defined as a knowledgeable and experienced guide, a trusted ally and advocate, and a caring role model. An effective mentor is respectful, reliable, patient, trustworthy, and a very good listener and communicator. In a university, mentors can be found among faculty and professional staff. But mentors can also be found in the ranks of students themselves. Peer mentoring is a powerful program that can have very powerful effects on those involved. A mentoring program within the Bryant University Honors Program is a great opportunity for both the mentors involved and also for the incoming students. The mentors are able to get a chance to give back to the Honors Program in the form of helping nervous students, while the mentees are able to learn more about the Program in a fun and interactive environment. Not only does a peer mentoring program allow for the students involved to learn more about each other and themselves, they are also able to make new friends in both upperclassmen and incoming students. The Bryant University Honors Program Peer Mentoring Program is in its initial year during the 2010-2011 academic year. Zachary Suter and Stephanie Lemire, the co-chairs for the Peer Mentoring Program on the Student Honors Council, have worked hard to develop a program that will be beneficial for both the mentors and mentees participating!
